“The scenes of daily life”

It is a private house in the quiet residential area in Tokyo.

The maximum floor area that can be utilized under legal restrictions is usually demanded, especially in densely built-up areas. However, the important issue is not the floor area but “the activities of daily life” = “the scenes of daily life”.
Thus, we tried to construct the space from the concept of “the scenes of daily life”.

Within discussions about “the scenes of daily life” with the client, we began to understand that daily casual activities and happenings consisted of events such as “conversation between husband and wife”, ” the sky observed from the kitchen ” and “children’s birthday parties”. We realized that these casual and spontaneous moments help one feel the quality of daily life.

The composition was determined by the associating “the scenes of daily life” with the context derived from the site and the laying it out in three dimensions.

Some private rooms are on the ground floor and the second floor is made as one large space and it fulfills the supports “the scenes of daily life” by dividing each space with furniture.

Furniture in this house has the role of being a stage set, to create the scenes of daily life that we intended.

Just as there are various scenes in a film, we aimed to make a house that staged the various scenes of daily life, while allowing the dweller to become the leading role.

“Volume that brings color to architecture”

At GENETO we have been thinking how we can make a functional space that is economically viable with the focus of creating something more than furniture and something less than architecture.
In the beginning project, Re-ped (2001), we made the volume based on people’s activity with a plywood frame.
Since then, we have been developing the potential of the functionality of the space by creating a room in which the furniture has a larger presence in terms of scale.

Recently, our interests tend to look towards creating various scenes through furniture, and how furniture can clearly determine the activities and patterns of daily life and usage within a space.

In the DG-HOUSE, rather than the idea of ‘functional furniture’ we begin with the notion of furniture within a space that has the authority to determine activity within a space.
The volume is made with a sequence of organic forms constructed by a 24mm plywood frame and is completed by fitting in the surface material plywood.

The volume is put together with methods of construction taken from architectural construction methods mixed with those when building furniture.

This method makes it possible to create large volumes with an architectural scale economically, keeping the scale of furniture.
Furthermore, the volume of the children’s room is placed on the upper floor and works as a lateral support for the structure.

It is viewed as one mass by painting black on structural plywood, while keeping the qualities of the wood when seeing it in the vicinity. The black color toning has been done in our own factory. We have been able to elaborate the space with the accuracy of furniture because we have managed our own factory (pivoto) and practiced various industrial methods, such as specific painting methods.

The reason why we can elaborate the space with the accuracy of furniture is that we have managed our own factory (pivoto) and practiced various industrial methods, the details and the painting methods.
